Code of Conduct

Purpose

McMinnville Chess Club believes our community should be truly open for everyone. As such, we are committed to providing a friendly, safe, and welcoming environment for all, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, religion, disability, and skill level.

We invite all players, volunteers, attendees, sponsors, and participants to help us realize a safe and positive club experience for everyone. This code of conduct outlines our expectations for participant behavior as well as the consequences for unacceptable behavior.

McMinnville Chess Club also has Principles of Club Etiquette that can be consulted for many situations, including good sportsmanship and how to ask for help. For situations where our Principles of Code Etiquette may not apply, we have adopted this Code of Conduct, the US Chess SafePlay Policy and the US Center for SafeSport Code.

Citizenship

A supplemental goal of this code of conduct is to increase fun, engagement, and recognition by encouraging participants to recognize and strengthen the relationships between what we do and the larger chess community.

In service of this goal, McMinnville Chess Club organizers are looking for exemplary citizens throughout our club events, and will recognize select participants on the website.

If you see someone who is making an extra effort to ensure our community is welcoming, friendly, and encourages all participants to contribute to the fullest extent, we want to know. You can nominate someone by letting an organizer know in person or contacting us through our Contact us form.

Expected Behavior

  • Be considerate, respectful, and collaborative.
  • Refrain from demeaning, discriminatory or harassing behavior and speech.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings and of your fellow participants. Alert club organizers if you notice a dangerous situation or someone in distress.
  • Participate in an authentic and active way. In doing so, you help the McMinnville Chess Club and make it your own.

Unacceptable behavior

Unacceptable behaviors include: intimidating, harassing, abusive, discriminatory, derogatory or demeaning conduct by any attendees of McMinnville Chess Club and related events. All McMinnville Chess Club venues may be shared with members of the public; please be respectful to all patrons of these locations. At club venues that serve food and drinks, attendees may not bring outside food and drinks and are encouraged to consider supporting our venues by making a purchase.

Harassment includes: offensive verbal comments related to age, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, disability, and skill level; inappropriate use of nudity and / or sexual images in public spaces (including presentation slides); deliberate intimidation, stalking or following; harassing photography or recording; sustained disruption of gameplay, or other events; inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.

Consequences of unacceptable behavior

Unacceptable behavior will not be tolerated whether by other attendees, organizers, venue staff, sponsors, or other patrons of McMinnville Chess Club venues.

Anyone asked to stop unacceptable behavior is expected to comply immediately.

If a participant engages in unacceptable behavior, the club event organizers may take any action they deem appropriate, up to and including expulsion from the club events without warning or refund.

Several of our organizers are mandatory reporters, meaning we have a duty to report known or suspected abuse or neglect relating to adults with disabilities, youth, elderly persons, and dependent adults.

What to do if you witness or are subject to unacceptable behavior

If you are subject to unacceptable behavior, notice that someone else is being subject to unacceptable behavior, or have any other concerns, please notify an organizer as soon as possible at the club event, via our Contact us form, or the organizations listed on our Report a concern page.

The McMinnville Chess Club organizers will be available to help participants contact venue security or local law enforcement, to provide escorts, or to otherwise assist those experiencing unacceptable behavior to feel safe for the duration of the club events. Organizers are identified at each club event.

Scope

We expect all participants (sponsors, volunteers, speakers, attendees, and other guests) to abide by this code of conduct at all club event venues and club-related social events.
